Who are best actresses for the Buck?

© AP Photo/Evan AgostiniNaomi WattsWho are the best actresses for the buck?
Oct. 5, 2009, 3:52 PM EST
By Dorothy Pomerantz, Forbes staff

LOS ANGELES -- In the old Hollywood, it was all about the quote: what an actress could demand as an upfront paycheck. Nowadays, strapped studios are just as interested in what kind of return on investment they can get for their money when hiring a leading lady. Sure, Angelina Jolie brings instant press attention to a project, but is she worth upward of $10 million?

Based on our latest estimations of the actresses in Hollywood who offer studios the best return on investment, there are plenty who offer more bang for the buck than Jolie. The women who came out on the top of our list tend to be lower-profile stars who are happy earning paychecks of around $5 million and under.

Top-ranked Naomi Watts is a perfect example. The actress has yet to be involved in any kind of high-profile scandal and she usually shares equal screen time with a male lead, like in last year's "The International," which also featured Clive Owen.

Watts' paychecks are relatively small (by Hollywood standards), which helps her return on investment number, especially when she stars in a movie that turns into a major hit, like 2005's "King Kong," which earned $550 million at the box office worldwide. For every dollar Watts was paid on her last three major films, the movies earned an average of $44.

In order to create our list, we looked at the 100 biggest stars in Hollywood. To qualify, each actress had to have starred in at least three movies in the past five years that opened in more than 500 theaters. (In Watts' case we didn't count her 2008 film "Funny Games" because it only played on 288 screens.)

We didn't include animated films because the actresses aren't really the draw, and they tend to take pay cuts for voice work.

For past lists we have required that actresses earn at least $5 million per movie, but we decided to waive that this time around. We calculated each star's estimated earnings on each film (including upfront pay and any earnings from the film's box office receipts, DVD and TV sales). We then looked at each movie's estimated budget (not including marketing costs, which are susceptible to accounting chicanery) and box office, DVD and television earnings to figure out an operating income for each film.

We added up each star's compensation on her last three films and the operating income on those films and divided total operating income by the star's total compensation to come up with each return on investment number.

One thing most of the actresses on this list have in common is that they did not carry the films on their own. In Hollywood, it's still rare for a woman to be the main star. For the most part, women are co-stars or they appear in ensemble films like "He's Just Not That Into You," which was a surprise hit in February, earning $177 million at the box office worldwide.

That film's success helped Jennifer Connelly take second place on our list. For every dollar Connelly was paid, her films earned an average of $41.

In third place is Rachel McAdams. The young actress is one of the few to really carry a movie, 2005's "Red Eye," which also featured Cillian Murphy. McAdams has scored by appearing in relatively low-budget movies (like "Red Eye" and 2004's "The Notebook") that have done well at the box office, though none have been massive hits. For every dollar McAdams was paid, her films earned an average of $30.

T.R. input - This is star power. how many people would come to a event that P.Diddy starred in or Beyonce came too? Promo is limited when you got the name of the bid fish at your side.

Llama Jerky?

Hey its Ron S., Campaign Director for T.R. Marketing. I just had to go against procedure and jump on T.R.'s Blog here to run a post about a new campaign we signed that I'm Directing. Its for a whole sale meat factory. I thought I heard it all until this.

Now I love food especially meat. A smoked Tenderloin, a tender brisket, a ribeye, and now Flank Steak. OHH Yummy!! So I just sat down to finalize the promotion and low and behold the owner of R&C Meats springs Something funny on me. He says, "I want to do whatever I can to push this Fresh Cut Jerky too." (In his thick country accent) Of course, I'm gonna wonder why? Everybody loves Jerky. Not the most healthy with all that sodium, but the meat is real lean with tons less saturated fats embedded within. So its definately not the worse thing to eat. Especially them cowboys love them some fresh jerky cut from the farm. (Thats my country accent) I thought I heard him wrong when I heard this so I asked him to repeat. Yes, he said "Llama Jerky is not known very well, I want to be the first to supply it" .......... Yes he did say Llama As in CuzKo on "Emperors New Groove" Llama. I could not believe it. I had to try it. Should feel Kind of guilty, but why? Just cause I was chewing on a free spirted lively Innocent Llama with its fluffy coat and cute bottom lip jiggle as they chew the hay. But out here they cut up a deer or a buffalo that we city folk eat so why not?

Well, I reserve my opinon till my next write up. Anybody that has tried this that they call Llama jerky I beg you to tell me your reviews in the comments box below. As a professional courtesy to help me describe it to the new jerky lovers as well as send it to our subscribers that may want to try a sample. T.R. Really wants me to make the trip to hand out some samples. OHHH!!! Why me? Look out for the next write up about Llama Jerky.

Franchise - Mondelis Part 3

In light of the current Pre-launch and Launch of Mondelis - The Newest Premier On-line Society, we have dedicated this release to touch on Franchises. Couple tidbits we've encountered aiding in Lauching and Marketing a concept that is adopted to turn Profit.
We at T.R. Marketing urge the possiblity of buying Franchises all the time. As marketers its a lay in the park. We now have inherited a campaign for a business that has already gone through ringers. They have already gone through the trials to see if the phone book will give them business or how many commericals they should run. Corp "rules" have to be inherited but Even so, its still your business. The Buy -In Fees have to come from you, any additional marketing, a portion or all of supplies. You almost ask "Why don't I just start my own Business?" Because your not seeing any money for about a couple years. Say that you bought a Taco Bell Franchise. The name is already there. Even if you could, you wouldn't name your Franchise John's Taco Bell. Just that one word in front, people wonder what business that is. How does the Brand Recognition help with your marketing. The Name! Brand recognition! Most Franchises get their money back fairly quickly because of it. You could name it on the books whatever you want, but if customers see a McDonalds, their going to go. If they see the McRibb come back, they're not going to say "I want to grab a McRibb since its back out. Lets got to that McDonalds Franchise to grab it". As Far as they are concerned, you are the founder and inventor of the McRibb. The Buy-in Fees are over $50,000, alot of time but are worth it in the long run. The "Feel out" work has already been done.
Corps that offer Franchise Opportunities require only to "Keep up the Image", but it still your business. It a Marketing Coordinators Dream. We once ran promo for two seperate State Farm Agents only 1 Block from each other. One kept saying the "Budget" was too low to do alot of extravagant Promo. Allegedly, State Farm had put restrictions on everything. We had to scrounge all we could to street team for him and follow up on past clients. Yet the other agent only 300 feet south, with the same Affiliation and same market, gave us a couple thousand dollar budget. We were able to spread it out to Phone Book, Radio, a couple T.V. Spots for him.
That is one of the biggest reasons we signed on to promote Mondelis - The World Leading Internet Society. It is a sure fire way to have a inexpensive successful business. Its directly tied to Social Networking. Picture Myspace or Facebook. What you do on them, how many hours you spend on them, how many people you contact on them. Now imagine earning a part-time/full time income also. The same exact thing your doing on Myspace and Facebook your doing on the New Mondelis Social Network and getting kick back. The best Franchise Opp. Its the ONLY lucrative On-line Franchise. Buying in is only $174 and you have the infinitate ways to promote your business. The most minimum investment to Receive a hefty return in way less time just like you would a McDonalds.

Having a Marketing Coordinator

It's a fair but an interesting question to hear people ask "Why would I pay the extra salary for a Marketing Coordinator?". Its kind of funny to hear because people love to worry about mandatory needs when they deem them mandatory, but by then alot of money and time has been wasted.
Lets explain by giving an example. Is it possible to replace your water pipes when you don't have the experiance, nor the patience, nor the time to do the job. Yeah of course you can do it. Its not rocket science. Lets subtract the negatives, like the mandatory basics of not knowing to turn off your water valves from all sources or that you must change all pipes throughout the house, not just the rusted ones. You actually can figure it out for the most part and it can be palable to perform the job. What materials do you need? Which ones will do the job so your not doing it again in 2 years? Which Materials are efficient and cost effective? How Long will it take? With this duration how will your everday be effected? If it can not be done at a specific short time, How will you and your family manage? These are only some of the keys to consider for any influencial project. There is a good amount of facets to consider before starting. What has to be done to make it palable? The possiblity it gets done well at a reasonable time and well is slim. But you need your plumbing replaced, configured, and maintenanced regularly in order to have, not only good plumbing, but save you loss of investment and agrivation in the long hall.

Lets not delve really deep into the analogy, and bring the point. Marketing for a business is as essential as having your foundation of materials to do the job. Your a repairman, you need a toolbelt; your a baker you need dough. Your in Business, You need to MARKET. No business last without promoting efficiently. Its just that simple. However, its tedious, its calculating. It's not calculus, you can figure alot of it out. But to have it down will take years of trial and error and experimentation of new resources. Every business is different. The phone book may work well for one Business but not another. As well a radio spot will be pointless to one business in contrast to bread and butter of another. While your "Experimenting", you have taken away from upgrading and adjusting what you need to perserviere your business. Times change the market changes Especially today. You are digging into your pocket more and more because you gave a half cocked effort in your marketing. Owners throw away thousands of dollars, especially on start up, because they just wanted to do the "essentials" to save money. Marketing is usually what they "save on". What "essentials" can you do when you now let a salesman talk you into a $1500 promotion that gives you barely any return. Why? Because you were so configured with all the other start-up costs, inventory, compliance that "Something" had to be done to launch your business. So a untold deadline is now given to force you to jump into the first Marketing resource you think will work without knowing what is cost to ROI? What demographic uses it? How much penetration has it garnered? $1500 have now gone to one resource that could have been spread to several more effective resources.

I quote one of the Premier Marketers of our time when I say "Let go". You know what your doing in your craft. Unless you are Marketing Company, Hire a Marketing Coordinator. We suggest T.R. Marketing - Some of the most Influential Marketing Coordintors around. LOL. When you have a marketing coordinator it falls under a simple principle. "You called Joes Plumbing. 30 years of service under our Belt". The stress you will face is unbelieve able when launching a new business or campaign. You will not have patience or time to put into what it takes to promote your business. Put in the hands of someone who knows ins and outs of the most important factor to your business. Its a investment as well as a need. Make those pipes last 15 years rather than 5 by spending on the copper bearing rather than the aluminum. Relaying those wall plasters are expensive.

We are T.R. Marketing (trmarketmanage.com) and This is what we do and We do it so well.

Mondelis - Part 1, Competition is Cut Throat!! Even On-line Gaming!!

You know the funniest thing about competition. As we grow up in the industry of Marketing and Business, one thinks that alot of what he does is for nothing. You are slaving away (you are writing countless Blogs LOL) and no one is paying any mind. No one cares. Then one day you see your "comp" putting in extra work all of a sudden. They have been waiting a while for you to make your move. Now its time to strike. It's hard to believe but without so we would not have Wal-mart or Chase or even Microsoft.

This has happened to us a couple times. First off the reason writing this Blog came to mind. Mondelis -The Newest Premier On-line Social Community - is soon to be launching in just over a couple weeks. And the web is really buzzing in aniticipation. 20,000+ Pre-Enrolls before the Official launch. Low and Behold we jump on Myspace to do some daily Bulletins and we see Gamevance throwing a ad trying to pull more subscribers. This is a free service that us New Oldschool kids loved for awhile. Most of these games were around when we were kids. We know GameVance has been around a while acquiring peoples nostaligic mind sets. We've Downloaded a couple of those old school and it was fun. When all of a sudden did they start promoting themselves to expand their network. We thought this was just a throwback site. They have never thrown as much ads throughout their entire existence. They made sure they iterate fully that their services are free. This Push came within the last couple months. Convieniently when Mondelis started their Pre-launch. We can only assume they really have taken a gander at what Mondelis is doing and don't want to lose their clout. We thought they just wanted to have us all reflect on "BAck in the Day"

To follow this anecdoctal, this reminds us of just last year when we co-launched the S.L. Steam. A semi-Pro Baskeball team that was supposed to land in the ABA this year. We started our promo and out of absolutely nowhere another Utah Franchise started. No warning, no release, absolute last minute. Just announced exactly 2 months before the season starts. Almost no promo and half-cocked tryouts. The robbery wasn't that they kind of took the thunder out from the Steam. It was the fact they did not follow through with it. They collapsed and closed Which made everyone else that would dare to follow their footsteps a sure fire loss. C'mon!! The world was built on comp, but don't just go and steal everyones fire. It was unfair and uncool.

This Blog is getting too long so we are going to make it a two parter. But we'll end with saying go to Gamevance and sign-up for their service. It acually will make the launch of Mondelis that more coveted by comparison. Oldschool can't beat New School.

Mondelis - The Newest Premier Social Site

ONe can say in these economic times that people are trying to stay at bay when it comes to spending money. YeaH!! Don't spend money and thats how this economy will get back up. Riigghhtt!! So T.R., Being one of the fearless, we signed on to represent The newest On-line Social Site from Mondelis, a online gaming company that combines Social Networking with on-line games and Rewards Shopping. War of Warcraft while you "Twitter" your girlfriend. Destroy aliens while you upload pics of you digging in your nose. Shop on the best on-line stores on the market. It's I N G E N I O U S.

Imagine this!! Two of the biggest draws to internet usage in one area. There is a shocking realization, but until the last couple years not everybody still has glued to the computer. The population as a whole still did not want the headache of extra technology. Now with online gaming, shopping (Ebay, Overstock), and social networking the internet usage increased 40% over the last five years. The constant plugging for the newest thing and people able to upload GIGS of media, everyone of every age loves and engulfs the internet. Video Games - $319 million dollars was made on Grand Theft Auto's last release. We all love games and kids today don't know about Arcades. Now add a network affiliation like Myspace (over 230 million subscribers) and you got a garnered tool that will addict you. They Structered the site so you can Make a little side income too.

Mondelis will revolutionize the internet. It will bring the meat to the masses. Our advice is if you had any thought about starting your own business but don't have the huge capital or collateral, start it here where the customer base is included. Huge commendation on this concept. We can't wait for the release Sept. 1. I rank it @ the slap yourself in the forehead HARD (myspace and facebook) for not thinking it before. We have been given the permission to have a couple pre-sign ups for people to try it out for free before open invite. Go to echoloops.com and put in the Invite code TS24115 7 Under the "Sign-up" TAB

Phone Books - Old SchooL?

Having a client affiliate thats a leading phone book Publisher has absolutely nothing to do with the views of this marketer. (At least I think it doesn't) One of the leading things I have to hear when I start my canvas for more clientele is how much of a dead resource the phone book is. "Oh, everyone uses the internet", "Oh, I can find assistance on my cell phone". It surprises me to hear all this because people's dependability of technology somewhat out weighs their common sense.

Why would someone be ok waiting for a computer to load, hoping all files are not corrupt so you will have a good boot, and hope nothing is wrong with the internet connection? Wi-Fi signal is strong enough? Why would you pay extra money on your cell phone to find a number, when you can just reach across and look through a book. Ask your cousin or your spouse to race you next time to find the nearest Pizza Hut. Grab one of these new age kids, that believe reading a book is "old school", to jump on the phone and get the $1.75 charge when you can just open a book and find the same info. See who wins

Speaking of cell phone, please don't get me started on using the internet on the cell phone. Good Gosh!! It rivals Dial-up speeds. Whats wrong with you people? On the other hand, I'm not trying to impose that internet searches are not parallel. Google has saved me more than many times when I can't find a number I needed at the last minute. But it honestly reminds me of the part on WALL-E where every human is fat and overweight and does not want to get out their chairs. Myself, as a business owner in the Marketing field, relies on the phone books heavily as to be intertwined in each area. To syndicate available targets everywhere for a new campaign. Small cities are a really untapped resource for product distribution launches. Most of my vendors are not interested in sending me out to these areas to Scope it out. If I need to place "Seed" in a area, a search engine does not give me the intimates a phone book or a phone book site does. Then theres the Phone Book Sites. Be honest with you, this is where you would think phone books may have bit themselves. However, prices are at a all time high. Retailers are buyng a average of 1/2 page ads from Utility Company phone books. The most expensive by the way at $6k-12k a year. Advertising is expanded so much but phone books are still needed. The Guide to the community is a the best way to determine everything in that community. Mini's are available in most areas, so Keep your book on you and save some time. Trust me when I say this is still the first resource people use when they look for something. Its the most trusted source to entwine into a foreign area

Video/Audio for Internet Marketing

My first real blog!! My first real blog!! Well I Reposted this from my other blog but it was the first one.

So what will I bring up in my first blog.......I'm gonna give a hard talk bout the subject I find most dear. Keeps me up at night. The untouched concept of the expansion of my business. Making my business successful and big? Marketing...yes, but the core concept..no. My unoriginal yet untapped concept is going to bring product/services to the masses through alot of regular means (fliers, poster, commercials, etc) as a secondary. The core stimulate from the expanded distribution of customized video and audio productions. All Though around Longer than the internet, Video/Audio productions are just starting to really hit its niche lately. But even then the quality of production and or scripting is highly poor. I see this guy the other day on You Tube that was actually doing dry porn with a stuffed animal. I mean talking to it and everything. This guy acutally has a regular webcast of people that watch. Words of some Comments have actually been "funny" and "entertaining". Wow, are we that hard up. We all constantly are getting those e-mails now-a-days from the in-laws and the grandparents that have clips of MadTV or funny pics of babies bungee jumping. H-i-l-a-r-i-o-u-s yes but is this all there is for me to save up my $400 laptop plus $60 internet (per month mind you) to enjoy. Reading is cool but I grew up in the Watch-the-freakin-TV generation. Then the segway to the Monitor-The-World on a Screen generation.

Unfortunately, a majority of actual professional clips on line are almost all tutuorials. No knock on them. I have learned tons to catapult my internet chapter from mikefilsaine.com and LVDan's myspace page. I even have signed with Watch TV on PC (One of the only "Cable" Stations that broadcasts regular shows on cable from across the world) as my newest client. I am beyond excited to see the craze of watching soaps from Saudi Arabia or "comedy" from London. Even swimsuit specials from Brazil. GGGRRROOOWWWLLL!!! Other than that, it is almost none existant to see any quality anything on the internet . At least, that I actually want to watch on regular basis.

So here is a couple hints of what I wish to do. How bout live concerts via Pay-Ver-View or on Demand as soon as you get home? How bout a live demo time that one can e-mail video resumes and reels to appropriate parties? What will people think of pro Video/Audio used to be the forefront of a mom and pops campaign? Thats what I want to know.Been around for six years and have been highlighted with original productions for Air Rider Vaccuums, Gusalini's Hip Hop debut Album, The Local Pages Phone Book, and DJ Chrome Spin Around. I'm going to do every thing I can to bring Video Production to the masses. My affiliate for this will be Reel 1 Media Productions (www.reel1productions.com) a small but really high talented company that have put out some crazy productions. American Biker Cooking, Love Your Band ON DEMAND, and one of the first pure high school sports shows around. Become a friend on myspace.com/reel1 and/or twitter (http://www.twitter.com/rt2night) I want to keep regular tabs of everyone interested in this concept. I got underground CD's, unreleased books, and upcoming sound studios I'm developing and debuting soon.

Soccor Season!! You need a place to watch all games!!

During the transition of major sports broadcast from round ball to fast ball lets not forget one of the foremost sports world wide. Soccer. All though much older and more reknown,World Soccor facilitates second rate popularity here in the U. S. Mexico, France, Brazilian, Caribeans; you name it. They adore soccer. Opening day to us is like Mardi Gras in all these countries. (Besides Canada of course - field of ice). Me, I'm a B-ball fan with the adapted game of football as my secondary. I grew up as soccer to be a activity we play to finish a P.E. year. Really fun to play, but not too much played on the block or the most popular Nintendo game.

In the U.S we account for less than 5% of soccer fans. That means a good majority of the fan base of U.S. soccer are soccer MOMS. Wow!! The most revered worldwide sport in the world is revoked by the nation that tenures the best athletic traditon. When was the last time anybody ever even knew of the game time of a college soccer game.

So lets crunch some numbers. The olympics soccer bolstered a huge 100 million per country viewing per match per day. The U.S. had As good as any soccer coverage broadcasted. But pailed a measley 2 million total. Be honest I'm not a die hard fan. Far from it. But give some respect. Other countries already can't stop talking bout us as damn yanks.

Some attempts are being made by the U.S. to expand the fanbase through. MLS brings in roughly 500k viewers a game (This includes actual people at stadiums). Minor leagues like USL 10,000. Even espn has a seperate sub network to facilitate it. Espn Deportes gives a regular highlight analysis of soccer from across the globe just as we send Nascar highlights over the airwaves. But even just theory of respect, can we do more? Can we rival the hype for a sport where one of the greatest nations in the world ignores to prestige of opening day?

International cable is one of the many usages which I think is great. Television from all over the globe gets many of its viewers from foreigners that are in the U.S. All games are broadcasted and commentaried by THEIR local sports guys. Talking bout a hoot to watch. Even If I Can't sometimes understand i'll just play some R&B on my radio. I may not here the GGGOOOAALLLLL. But I will hear "My Girl, Talking bout my girl" when I see a great scissor Kick score.

Make sure you grab a couple months from WatchTVonPC to watch your native country or other country games. One of the unknown broadcast resources the U.S. is trying to expand watching soccer viewing. Catch the soccer games from almost any sports station in the world. International T.V.? I Love it.
